House of Jacob Exterior - c. 1967
The number 5671 on the facade of the building refers to the Hebrew year of its founding (i.e. 1911). The two doors on
the sides led to the women's gallery. R. B. Bennett spoke at the laying of the cornerstone of the building in September 19ll,
before he had become Prime Minister.

Newspaper Article Noting Confusion Over The Synagogue's Name, Calgary News Telegram - June 7, 1911
To quote:
"Building Inspector 'Dick' Harrington received a shock on Tuesday afternoon when a city contractor submitted a set off
plans bearing the title 'House of Jacob.'
"What in thunder do you want to plaster the man's name all over the plans for?' he asked curiously. 'I don't care whose
house it is as long as it complies with the building bylaw.'
"The contractor could not quite catch the drift of the Building Inspector's talk, but finally glanced at the plans himself
and then saw what the trouble was. He was applying for a permit to erect a synagogue for the Jewish residents of the city.
"The synagogue, which is to be called 'The House of Jacob' is to be erected on Fifth Avenue East, and when completed
will cost in the neighborhood of $5,000."
