Our Gratitude to these LIFE & LEGACY Donors who have formalized their commitment as of March 1, 2022:

DHCP Archives Update

Our multi-year grant from the Government of Canada’s Documentary Heritage Communities Program, has allowed us to continue our work on the Jewish Historical Society of Southern Alberta Archives Backlog project.

Since our last website update we have established several subject-specific collections, including Judaica, Local Authors, Military, Performing Arts, Recreational Sports and Zionism.  (As previously mentioned, a “collection” is a group of material collected on purpose, purely out of interest, as opposed to a “fonds”, which consists of material generated by day-to-day activities.)

We have also processed over 2 additional meters of textual records (approximately 7 banker boxes) establishing fonds for Calgary Jewish Choral society, Beth Israel Players, ORT Calgary, Jewish Welfare Fund, Hebrew Ladies Aid, Jewish Hockey League, Maccabi Canada-Calgary, and Jewish Boy Scouts, as well as for the Ted Riback family.

In addition, the current round of funding has enabled us to complete an inventory of all of our back-logged oversized material.  These oversized items have not yet been processed or housed, but each has now received a specific fonds or collection designation.  We have also been able to process significant accruals (archival additions) to several of our extant fonds, particularly Lethbridge, and have begun work on the description and re-housing of our Oral History collection, which includes close to 200 oral history interviews and transcripts.

We look forward to posting full archival descriptions by the end of this grant (March 2020).  Until then, or for more information on any aspect of the JHSSA Archives Backlog Project, just contact or drop by the office.
