Update: JHSSA Archival Collections Accessibility Project

Thanks to an additional grant from the Government of Canada’s Documentary Heritage Communities Program, we have been able to continue our work on the Jewish Historical Society of Southern Alberta Archives Backlog project.

The current round of funding has so far enabled us to process significant accruals (archival additions) to several of our extant fonds, particularly B’nai Brith, and to complete an overall inventory of the unprocessed material awaiting a specific fonds or collection designation.

In addition, since our last website update, we have processed over 4 meters of textual records (approximately 14 banker boxes) establishing fonds for Calgary JCC, Temple B’nai Tikvah, the I.L. Peretz Institute (including the Peretz School) and the Calgary Jewish Academy, which includes the Calgary Hebrew School / Talmud Torah holdings.

We have also created item lists for many of our fonds, in order to help researchers determine whether or not our material is likely to be useful to them.  For example, where the description may indicate that the fonds includes newsletters put out by an organization between 1957-1986, the item list will specify the actual dates of the various issue copies we have.

We look forward to posting the full archival descriptions in the near future.  Until then just contact or drop by the office, and we’ll be pleased to share them with you.
